Honoring the past while embracing innovation in accounting

ON Jan. 31 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati, officials of the Association of Certified Public Accountants in Public Practice (ACPAPP) made sure no one would suffer from a dull induction ceremony. With this year's theme "Gearing up for the New Era," the ACPAPP held a vibrant program that inducted a new group of officers, directors, chairpersons and their respective members who would lead the association in calendar year 2025.

Professional Regulatory Commission-Board of Accountancy (PRC-BOA) Chairman Noe Quinñanola kicked off the ceremony with his welcome remarks. He said that to remain relevant, public-practice accountants need to adjust to developments. He also related faith, trust, hope, confidence, love and attitude with the accounting profession.

2024 ACPAPP National President Minette Ame's farewell speech highlighted the organization's achievements — including the collective accomplishments of ACPAPP members, the strengthening of various ACPAPP chapters across the regions, and gaining more membership in the provinces in support of the advancement of the public practice of accounting. Last year's theme was "GRIT, redefined."

During her tenure, Ame demonstrated there should always be love when performing public duties. Her thoughtful reflections served not only as personal validation but also as an inspiration to look forward to the future with optimism.

The keynote speaker was Corazon de la Paz-Bernardo, the first female honorary member of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and the first woman president of the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) as well as the Finance Executives Institute of the Philippines (Finex). She focused on this year's central objective to adjust to changes to enhance the caliber of work of public practitioners. She also expressed gratitude to ACPAPP for its continuing support of the accountancy profession.

Perseverance and determination

A highlight of the evening was the acceptance speech of 2025 ACPAPP National President Maria Lois Gregorio-Abad. She began by recounting her personal journey of perseverance and determination. From limited opportunities to becoming a leader in the profession, her story resonated deeply with the audience, a powerful reminder that success is within reach for those who commit to their aspirations.

She emphasized the importance of collaboration and the establishment of a technical working group to drive long-term strategic initiatives.

Abad's vision aligns perfectly with "Gearing Up for the New Era." She spoke of honoring the past while embracing innovation, ensuring that the profession remains agile in a rapidly changing world.

Sustainability and environmental responsibility were also central to her message, reinforcing the idea that public practitioners must not only maintain financial excellence but also contribute to broader societal progress. Her leadership promises a future that respects tradition while actively seeking growth and transformation.

The evening culminated in a celebratory toast led by PWC Philippines Chairman Emeritus Alex Cabrera, symbolizing a collective commitment to the association's mission. The event was not just an induction ceremony but a resounding affirmation of ACPAPP's dedication to excellence, adaptability and forward-thinking leadership.

As ACPAPP enters a new chapter, its members are more than ready to rise to the challenges and opportunities of this evolving landscape. "Gearing Up for the New Era" is not just a theme — it is a call to action, an invitation for public practitioners to innovate, lead and inspire. With a strong foundation and a clear vision, ACPAPP is set to redefine the future of accountancy to show that excellence is built on the courage to embrace change.
